Weight loss story: "I started to look double my age so I lost 20 kilos!"

39-year-old Madhukar Singh was met by an unpleasant comment during a college reunion, which made him realize that he was not maintaining a healthy weight and needed to make a big change in his life and fight the risk. This was when he decided to make the transformation and shed the flab! To know how he did it, read his story below:Name: Madhukar SinghAge: 39Height: 5 feet 7 inches

City: New Delhi (Currently working in Maldives)

Highest weight recorded: 85 kilos

Weight lost: 23 kilos

Duration it took me to lose weight: 13 months

The turning point: Although my "turning point" amuses me now, it did have a lasting impact on me when I was overweight.

I remember, I attended a college reunion. Back then, I used to weigh approximately 80-85 kilos. One of my female friends talked to me and said, "you look exactly like your dad now". This was the time I realized I had to change my look as I had started to look double my age. Take a look at my photos and you woul d believe me!

My breakfast: We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, I like to tweak my morning meals a little. I usually skip having my breakfast and instead, go for an early lunch at around 11 a.m. This strategy has really worked for me since I have my dinner early too, around 6 p.m. This pattern continues and ensures that I stay in a fasting state for around 16 hours. This has majorly helped me beat obesity. I fast for around 16 hours and all of my energy is derived from stored fat, rather than from the meals I consume. It might not suit others, but my diet plan helped me ditch the flab!

My lunch: I usually have something like 3 boiled eggs or egg whites, grilled chicken, sweet potatoes and a serving of fresh salad.

My dinner: In the evenings, I avoid carbs. However, I stick to brown rice with vegetables or grilled chicken. Salad again is a must-have!

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): I do not believe i n the concept of cheating on my diet. I believe that earned meals are better than cheat meals.

While I do try to avoid sugar, I give in to my chocolate cravings on days. That is what counts as my "cheat meal".

My workout: I work out for two hours, six days a week. One hour is exclusively dedicated to lifting weights. The next hour can be spent doing cardio, Tabata exercise or even HIIT. I also swim for two days a week.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Egg whites. I believe anything with egg whites is a low-calorie, protein-rich meal.Fitness secrets I unveiled: I solemnly swear by this and would advise anyone looking to remember this. Consistency and patience are the two most important keywords in a weight watcher's dictionary. The journey can be arduous but there is no denying that you won't get to see the results you desire. How do I stay motivated? Many say that motivation is the most important thing in the journey but if you ask me, discipline is the most importan t thing. Even if I am not really motivated or in the mood, I make sure I hit the gym. It is something I do not miss! How do you ensure you don't lose focus? There is a huge difference between how I used to look and how I look now. I see my old pictures and I feel an instant surge of motivation now. It inspires me to keep working towards my goal and get healthy.

What's the most difficult part of being overweight? I totally think that obesity is the biggest health risk you do not want to afford. Being overweight puts you at risk for a lot of diseases and depletes your productivity. Lethargy becomes a part of life.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? Ten years down the line, I want to see myself in a leaner, fitter shape and be proud of my look. What are the lifestyle changes you made? I have tried to cut away the sugar from my diet, as much as I can. I also eat on time now, so diet-wise, there have been a lot of differences. What was the lowest point for you? For a long time, I was so overweight, I couldn't see my feet because of my big "belly". Now, I can laugh about it and say that I do have two feet! Lessons learnt from weight loss: Getting six-pack abs are not always the goal. Weight loss is not just about getting ripped or flat but also about overall physical and mental wellness.
