This Intuitive-Eating Counselor Shares 6 Reasons You Shouldn't Compliment Weight Loss

Certified intuitive-eating counselor and registered dietitian Lauren Cadillac, RD, CPT, recently posted this graphic to her Instagram page about why you shouldn't compliment people on losing weight.

She said in her caption, "I genuinely believe that people are trying to be nice and give a compliment when they say things like 'Oh my gosh did you lose weight?! You look AMAZING?!'" But she told POPSUGAR, "I posted it because I've seen the damage it can cause. From my own eating disorders to now helping people heal their relationship with food, the thin ideal causes harm to everyone. You also have no idea what someone is going through."

She explained in the caption, "Personally the more compliments I received about my body (during my competition days) the more it kept me stuck in disordered eating.⁣⁣ It's hard to admit you have an eating disorder (or that you need help) when people are complimenting you for it."

With that said, here are six reasons Cadillac believes we should stop complimenting others on their weight loss:

  • It enforces the thin ideal that thinner equals better or that being thin is more beautiful or healthier.
  • It contributes to fat phobia and weight stigma, meaning being in a larger body is a bad thing.
  • You could be complimenting the side effect of depression, chronic illness, or an eating disorder.
  • It can encourage disordered behaviors. The person may think, "If my thinner body looks good now, then wouldn't it look better if I was even thinner?"
  • It enforces the idea that our worth equals our weight. We are so much more than what we look like.
  • It indirectly says the person looked bad/worse before.
  • If you receive comments about your weight or body, Cadillac said it's up to you how you want to respond. If it's someone close to you who always makes comments about how you look, you might feel OK saying something like, "I appreciate that you're trying to give me a compliment, but it makes me a little uncomfortable when you comment on my body." People can get defensive, though, which goes back to the point of Cadillac's post, which is to not comment on people's weight in the first place.

5 simple steps to "wipe out" excess fat, achieving your weight loss goal after 3 months

Dieting is considered to account for 70-80% of your weight loss plan. If you do the 5 simple steps below, it won't be difficult to lose weight quickly.

Excessive diet can help you lose weight but sometimes it has no benefits but also makes you have many health consequences. So there is a simpler way for you to lose weight in a short time without affecting your well-being. It comes from forming the following 5 habits.

5 simple steps to lose weight in a healthy way 1. Eat 3 meals on time

Eat 3 meals a day on time, have breakfast before 9 o'clock, lunch is best between 12-13 o'clock and dinner before 19 o'clock.

5 simple steps to wipe out excess fat, achieving your weight loss goal after 3 months

Most office workers and students cannot do this, because many people think that eating on time does not matter, which is also the main reason why they gain weight. If breakfast and lunch are not eaten on time and eaten after 19:00, this will be very harmful to the body, increasing heat and converting nutrients into body fat.

    2. Drink a glass of warm water before meals

Few people can do this, but the fact that drinking a glass of water can reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which will reduce the amount of food and help your stomach and health.

When eating, many people are too hungry and always eat a lot of food until they are full. This will cause a big burden on the stomach and weight gain is easy to happen.

5 simple steps to wipe out excess fat, achieving your weight loss goal after 3 months3. Eat more protein rich foods

Foods eaten in 3 meals should contain mostly high-protein foods, such as eggs, lean meat (beef breast, chicken breast), dairy products (no sugar) ... Protein can improve the system Immune system and resistance of the body. In addition, to digest a certain amount of protein, the body needs to consume more energy, thereby helping to reduce fat.

    4. Eat lots of high-fiber foods

Vegetables are rich in fiber. You can choose vegetables that are rich in water, low in calories and bring fullness, such as broccoli, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, lettuce ... to reduce the occurrence of hunger.

5 simple steps to wipe out excess fat, achieving your weight loss goal after 3 months5. Control your speed when eating

Many people feel that they are too busy at work to not spend a lot of time on eating, so they try to eat as fast as they can. However, if you eat too fast, it will only make your stomach become suppressed and food accumulated in the abdomen for a long time to digest, thereby leading to weight gain.

5 simple steps to wipe out excess fat, achieving your weight loss goal after 3 months

Therefore, when eating, you should control the speed of eating, chew slowly, preferably at least about 20 times before swallowing.

Last but not least, get up and move more gently to promote gastrointestinal motility, which can help the food to be digested quickly and reduce fat accumulation in the abdomen.

The secret of exercise and weight loss

THERE is indeed a secret connection between exercise and weight loss. The secret is — exercise does not and will not functionally or sustainably help with weight loss.

Over the years I have given rational and calculations explaining the how and why, but this time I will put forward the latest study.

Walking 10,000 steps a day will not help with weight loss

Fit bands, Android and Apple watches everywhere have been ticking off their motion sensors, feeding their pedometer apps with millions of steps all around the world.

Individuals walking and marching on the spot in the belief that each step will bring them closer to that fitness industry stated magical number, convinced that they will be healthier and certainly slimmer for their numerically set target.

A recent study conducted at Brigham Young University found that an increased step count between 10,000 and 15,000 per day, six days per week over the course of 24 weeks, did not prevent the usual average gain of 3.4 pounds by students for that period.

For weight management, the steps were categorically useless.

Why people believe exercise will make them lose weight

In the 1970s, as more people began to gain weight and suffer from dietary-related illnesses, research was placing the cause squarely at the feet of the refined food industry.

In response, that industry helped to promote the idea that it is not what you are eating, but your own laziness that will kill you.

The solution, embrace the "bro" logic that movement requires energy, therefore more movement means more metabolism, resulting in less fat. Human efficiency and adaptability is not taken into consideration here, ignoring our ability to do more with less energy over time.

They told us to go to the gym and work off those pounds. In our imagination this fiction seems so logical, that even in the face of actual research, people, wrongly, cannot conceive anything else to be true.

This false idea persists in the hearts and minds of nations today and is still foolishly promoted by: Corporate wellness programmes; trainers; merchants; manufacturers; and television shows.

All influencing populations, diminishing the responsibility and focus from nutrition while protecting the processed foods industry and making millions for many in the fitness industry.

    How is exercise useful?

Is exercise useless? No, exercise is most definitely useful, and is one of the best things you can do for your well-being.

    Exercise can:

    • Increase healthy muscle mass for long-term, increased metabolism and body weight management.

    • Lengthen your life span.

    • Create a mindset and culture to allow you to embrace a healthy diet and lifestyle.

    • Manage moods and provide emotional benefits.

    • Strengthen joints.

    • Reduce pains.

    • Increase and maintain fitness, mobility, balance, and functionality.

    • Build heart, pulmonary and vascular health.

Exercise will do all that and much more, but because humans are extremely efficient and adaptive animals, it will not directly make you lose weight. You will never train away a poor diet.

Face the reality, embrace the discipline and get serious once and for all about your nutrition and change your life.

If you truly want to lower your body fat, change your body and health, get the fiction out of your head once and for all, and embrace the real knowledge of a fact-based wellness programme.

Lose Weight, Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

    By Robert PreidtHealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, March 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Here's more motivation for men to shed pounds if they're overweight: It could lower their risk for advanced prostate cancer.

Researchers analyzed data from 15 studies that included a total of nearly 831,000 men, including nearly 52,000 who'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Having a BMI (body mass index -- an estimate of body fat based on height and weight) above the range that's considered healthy (21-25) during middle to late adulthood was associated with the highest risk for advanced prostate cancer.

"These study results show that risk for advanced prostate cancer can be decreased by maintaining a 'healthy' weight, which is in line with guidelines by the American Cancer Society and World Cancer Research Fund," said study author Jeanine Genkinger, an associate professor of epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

"Adopting healthy eating and exercising are factors that can help maintain a healthy weight," Genkinger said in a school news release.

The researchers also found that a larger waist size was associated with an increased risk of advanced prostate cancer and death.

Previous studies have linked higher BMI with an increased risk of prostate cancer, but this is the first to connect larger waist size with increased risk of the disease, the authors said.

The study was published March 4 in the Annals of Oncology.

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in U.S. men. Fewer than 1 in 3 men with advanced prostate cancer are alive five years after diagnosis.

Why Skin Gets So Saggy After Weight Loss — and What to Do About It

Created for Greatist by the experts at Healthline. Read more

If you buy something through a link on this page, we may earn a small commission. How this works.

You just worked your butt off to lose some weight, but feeling lighter isn’t your only reward. Maybe your cheeks seem deflated. Or your booty got droopy. Your jawline’s sagging, and even your knees look wrinkly.

What’s the deal? Why didn’t your skin snap tight to your new bod?

Loose skin is usually a result of rapid weight loss. This can mean giving birth or having bariatric surgery, which leaves up to 70 percent of patients with loose skin.

Probably not. It’s tough to shrink loose skin without medical intervention, especially since adults produce limited collagen and elastin (the magic ingredients that make a baby’s skin so smooth and bouncy).

Here’s what influences your skin’s ability to tighten up

While there’s no magic way to shrink skin overnight, a few things could help over time.

Attention, all cardio bunnies! You might have stair-stepped your way to weight loss, but it’s muscle mass that will plump and tighten skin from the inside out.

Full disclosure â€" weight training doesn’t shrink your skin. Instead, it helps replace lost fat with new muscle mass. Your skin will look smoother and you’ll feel stronger and healthier.

    PSA for the new mommas:

If your loose skin is a side effect of pregnancy, talk to your doctor before lifting weights. You might need to avoid certain moves for a while.

    Do you mew?

If you’re trying to tighten up a loose forehead, cheeks, or chin, lifting weights isn’t going to do much. And though fans of face yoga â€" otherwise known as mewing â€" claim it works, there isn’t much research to back it up.

Gallons of firming cream won’t banish crazy-loose skin, but it can have a subtle tightening effect. It’s especially good at plumping thin, dry skin. That’s because the cream’s effect is literally only skin-deep.

    Look for these types.

  • Firming creams. Multi-ingredient firming creams pack a punch. Whether you’re looking for one with vitamins, gelatin (full of collagen), or fruit extracts, you might need to try a few brands before you find one that works for you.
  • Retinoids. Remember how collagen keeps your skin strong and tight? Well, retinoids are like armor that protects your skin’s collagen factories. Check out retinoid creams here.
  • Collagen. Another option is to slather on collagen directly. Hello, strong, elastic skin! Shop for collagen here.
  • Grapeseed oil. Hoping for a natural, plant based solution? Snag a bottle of grapeseed oil. This slippery little ointment makes your skin silky and maaaybe a bit tighter. Check out these grapeseed oil blends.
  • Try massage

Fans of jade rollers and facial scrubs, unite! Frequent users can attest that rubbing skin increases blood flow â€" and blood flow promotes proper cell function.

In one small study, women who combined a hand-operated facial massager with anti-aging cream had better results than the participants who used just the cream.

So next time you splurge on that trendy cream, rub it in with a roller or face massager.

The path to smoother skin is healthier skin. Supplements help.

Rapid weight loss causes loose skin, but sometimes your jiggle is because of stubborn fat. Subcutaneous fat lies directly under your skin and can make things look a little loose and wobbly.

Here’s your test: Pinch sagging skin between two fingers. Is it thicker than a few millimeters? If so, you’ve got some subcutaneous fat hanging on. Losing a few more pounds could nix the fat and firm your skin.

Head to your nearest med-spa or dermatologist for these non-invasive skin-tightening treatments. No scalpel required!

  • Chemical peels. Welcome to one of the oldest celebrity tricks in the book. Chemical peels cause your outer layer of skin (the saggiest part) to peel away, revealing shiny, smoother skin underneath.
  • Ultrasound skin tightening. Known as ultherapy, this treatment stimulates collagen production by heating your skin’s deepest layers. It’s best for tightening up saggy skin near your eyes, neck, and chin.
  • Radiofrequency. Similar to ultherapy, radiofrequency treatments heat up your skin’s outer layer (the loose one) to force it into a collagen-producing frenzy.
  • IPL/RF combo. Combining intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF) treatments is a great way to fire up both the surface and deep layers of skin for maximum collagen production.
  • Ablative laser resurfacing. This is one of Kim K’s go-to facial treatments for a reason. Laser resurfacing is like a chemical peel plus ultrasound tightening.

Your top layer of skin peels away while the laser’s heat kickstarts collagen production underneath.

  • Neuromodulators. Oh hey there, Botox! Whether you call it a neuromodulator or neurotoxin, these injections freeze your muscles so that wrinkles relax and smooth out until the solution wears off.

It’s a temporary fix (at least until your next injection), but there’s minimal downtime.

  • Body contouring

Sometimes all the remedies and spa treatments in the world aren’t effective enough to tighten and shrink loose skin. In these cases, body-contouring surgery could be an option.

For this cosmetic surgery, your doctor will make an incision (the “nip”) and cut out extra fat and skin before sewing you back up (the “tuck”).

This is a pretty serious ordeal, complete with hospital stay and extra recovery time. Chat with your doctor if you’re interested in body-contouring.

Saggy skin can be frustrating, especially if you’ve worked hard to lose weight. But there are ways to deal with the loose or jiggly parts of your body.

Collagen is the biggest factor in your skin’s tightness and elasticity. Most loose skin treatments, from creams to laser resurfacing, focus on boosting collagen production.

Lifestyle changes can keep collagen from slowing down even more. Take your vitamins, stop smoking (if you do), avoid tanning, and swap out harsh skin care for products with nourishing, medical-grade ingredients.

Gastric bypass improves weight loss, type 2 diabetes, study finds

March 4 (UPI) -- People who are both severely obese and have type 2 diabetes may benefit from weight loss surgery, a new analysis suggests.

In findings published Wednesday in JAMA Surgery, researchers report that those with both conditions -- which carry significant long-term health implications -- saw improvement in their type 2 diabetes symptoms after undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, the two most commonly performed weight-loss procedures.

In general, people who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass experienced greater weight loss, slightly higher type 2 diabetes remission rates and better long-term blood-sugar control than those who had sleeve gastrectomy, the study found.

"Overall, we found that in this very large group of adults with severe obesity and type 2 diabetes, the two most common bariatric surgical procedures led to substantial improvements in type 2 diabetes," co-author Kathleen M. McTigue, an associate professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, told UPI. "Since type 2 diabetes can lead to bad health outcomes, bariatric surgery is something that patients like those in our study should consider when they are thinking about how to manage their health."

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 34 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. And, as UPI reported on February 27, more than 40 percent of U.S. adults are obese or severely obese, which is defined as body mass index over 30.

Health experts believe there is significant overlap between the two conditions.

For their study, McTigue and her colleagues enrolled more than 9,700 people from 34 U.S. hospitals in the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network Bariatric Study and followed their health for roughly three years, on average. The mean age of study participants was approximately 50 years.

Weight loss at one year was more than 6 percent higher in people who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass compared to those who had sleeve gastrectomy, and rates of type 2 diabetes remission -- meaning healthy blood sugar levels without the need for medication -- were also 10 percent higher in this group.

In all, more than 59 percent of those who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass experienced remission one year after surgery, compared to 55 percent who had sleeve gastrectomy.

Five years after surgery, 86 percent of the study participants who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass had remission, compared 84 percent of those who had sleeve gastrectomy.

In all, among 6,141 patients who experienced remission, the subsequent type 2 diabetes relapse rate was lower for those who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass than those who had sleeve gastrectomy -- 8.4 percent versus 11 percent at one year after surgery and 33 percent versus 42 percent at five years after surgery.

In addition, at five years after surgery, those who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass saw greater reductions -- more than 1 percent versus less than 0.9 percent -- in hemoglobin A1c compared to those who had sleeve gastrectomy.

"For patients who are choosing between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, it's important to note that the rates of diabetes remission were similar for these two procedures," McTigue said.

People with more advanced diabetes at the time of surgery -- such as older people, those using insulin, those using more complex type 2 diabetes medication regimens or those with poor control of blood sugar -- may see larger improvements in their condition with gastric bypass than with sleeve gastrectomy, she said.

"Of course, patients' personal values, history with lifestyle approaches, and likelihood of adverse surgical outcomes should also be considered as patients and physicians consider the best way for a given adult to address type 2 diabetes, when it co-occurs with severe obesity," McTigue said. "Maintaining healthy eating and physical activity patterns and managing body weight are important considerations for all patients who have diabetes -- and developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles remains important following bariatric surgery."
